Ashtanga for body & mind
This Ashtanga retreat is held between the 11 and 14 of July 2019 in the deep forest of Sweden. It is the perfect choice for anyone who is curious or wants to deepen their knowledge about Ashtanga yoga, and also looking for a space to de-stress and rejuvenate. You will enjoy a very carefully constructed program with a range of holistic remedies, which combine asana practice with green eating, nature, breathwork and meditation.
Every detail of your stay at Asphyttan Metta House is taken care of to allow for your complete relaxation. This Ashtanga retreat offers morning practice and evening workshops, 1 theory class per day, as well as some sessions on safety in the practice and alignment/building foundations. We will finish of the retreat with a Acro Yoga session to have fun and bond.
We invite both beginners and intermediate, because it will be tailored to the individual and will work more closely with techniques, tools and 'tricks'. These will be taught in a way that can be easily absorbed by the student and applied to create progress in one's personal practice even after they have left the retreat. We will explore how to progress safely and effectively within our Asana practice.
Practice during the retreat
We will mix ashtanga yoga, with meditation, breathwork and a fun Acro Yoga session. Below you can read more about each practice.
Ashtanga is a dynamic yoga style and is often described as one of the more physical demanding styles. What is typical with ashtanga is that you practice the asanas (poses) in a set series, where the breath is synchronised with a flowing movement, which is called vinyasa. Usually an Ashtanga practice begins with five repetitions of Surya Namaskara A and five repetitions of Surya Namaskara B, followed by a standing sequence. Following this the practitioner begins one of six series, followed by what is called the closing sequence. There are six series and each student has to master the serie before moving on to the next one. During this beginners retreat the classes will be led and we will focus on the primary series. Ashtanga yoga is, like mentioned earlier, a more physical yoga style but it is not about performance - it is about tuning into the connection between your body, mind and spirit. Ashtanga brings many advantages to the practitioner: increase flexibility, increase strength and blod circulation, makes you feel more energised, cleanse muscles and organs from waste, calms the nervous system and decrease stress levels.
During this retreat the classes will be between 90 and 120 minutes long.
A daily silent sitting is an invaluable tool to have in a world that is increasingly distracted and simultaneously more demanding. As practitioners of silent meditation for many years, we understand its importance in our overall sense of well-being. Meditation is really very simple, and really all we need is to practice it. We will explore a few easy techniques of meditation that can be practiced anywhere and are perfect for the beginner meditator.
The word Pranayama literally translates to "Controlling the Life Force". This life force, or our inherent vitality can be increased through proper breathing, The science of yoga strongly believes that the breath and our state of mind are closely interlinked. The deeper and longer, our normal rate of breathing, the more peaceful and tranquil our mind is. Apart from that there are a whole host of physical benefits that come from an increased breathing capacity. Through this retreat we will explore some foundational Pranayama techniques that are safe and effective for beginners to practice daily. These morning sessions will leave you feeling vital, invigorated and at peace.

Our teacher, Rohil Jethmalani
Rohil grow up in India and began his journey into yoga by coming into contact with meditation 7 years ago. In a quest to find his true Self, he visited many masters and guides from different parts of the country. Soon the realization dawned that the real Guru is within, and other masters are simply mirrors. A year later he began to complement his meditation practice with Ashtanga-vinyasa. He has spent long periods of time over the past few years with his teacher, Ajay Kumar (sthalam8) learning Ashtanga in the traditional Mysore-style. Soon afterwards he began to teach, feeling the need to share the sacred practices that have brought about so much peace and fulfilment in his personal journey.
His unique style of teaching goes beyond simply the physical practice. The nurturing, yet challenging environment created in his classes pushes his students to tap into their inner potential. His intention is to bring about lasting inner transformation through asana practice. He believes that yoga is not simply a physical practice and strives to highlight the philosophies that underlie these rich and sacred traditions. Using yoga as not only a tool for physical transformation, but also to effect deeper mental and spiritual change.

“Rohil is not only hilarious - he is also very challenging and intensely inspiring! He has a lot of knowledge within asana, philosophy and anatomy - and he is so skilled in sharing and adapting the level depending on who he speaks to. That, together with his very calming and soothing presence you get a very special yoga experience. I encourage anyone and everyone to attend his retreats!” - Molly, Sweden
